The American Ideal: Booker T. Washington & Minority Education Today
Nearly 100 years after Booker T Washingtons death, minority education is still far from achieving his dreams of equal opportunity and success. Although blacks and whites enter college at similar rates, 36 percent of whites graduate with a four-year degree, compared with only 18 percent of blacks. Black jobless rates are higher than whites', and black income is lower (Barnes, et al). This paper will examine and compare the difficulties faced by Booker T. Washington to achieve a four-year degree, and the challenges faced by African-Americans today in garnering a quality education.
